Background
“Out from the Northern Wastelands came the hordes of Chaos. Savage and
unstoppable they swept through Kislev and into the Empire itself leaving
death and destruction in their wake. One by one the great cities of
Middenheim, Altdorf and Nuln fell. The Emperor Maximillian IV, with the
remainder of his army, was forced to flee to Bretonnia.
“There, in the city of Parravon at the foot of the Grey Mountains, his
was joined by human armies from Bretonnia, Estallia and the Tilean city
states as well as many demi-humans. If the Old World was to survive, the
hordes of Chaos would to be stopped at Grey Mountains. In the bloodiest
series of battles since the days of Sigmar, the allies forces held the
forces of Chaos at bay. Parravon stood firm.
“Years have past. A new border has been drawn. Though the encroachment
of Chaos has been halted for now, Chaos still reigns in all the lands
east of the Grey Mountains. Even the most optimistic observers find it
hard to envisage a day when the Empire can be restored.
“The collapse of the Empire was so swift that much had to be left
behind. Spread throughout the cities of the former Empire are invaluable
treasures and powerful artefacts that would be invaluable in the war
effort. There are also rumours of pockets of survivors who were caught
behind the enemy lines and who are doomed unless some sort of rescue
mission can be arranged.
“To this effect The Emperor in exile with the assistance of the Court
Wizard Guglielmini, has established a special force dedicated to
infiltration missions into the Chaos controlled cities of the former
Empire. Gugliemini is always looking out for adventurers who are
experienced and brave enough to conduct these operations beyond the
lines. Adventurers who succeed in three missions are offered permanent
positions with the force as well as honorary titles.
“But the Emperor’s men are not the only adventurers to defy death in
search of treasures. Less scrupulous freelancers can sometimes be found
among the ruins of the mighty Empire looking for a quick path to riches
but more often finding a quick grave. These. freelancers must watch
themselves not only from the denizens of Chaos, but from the emperor’s
own men.”
